Dark Days Update & Rescued Pear Dutch Babies

In between timing my contractions — another false alarm — J. offered me a pear that we bought at the farmer’s market this week.  He cut it into small slices and then discovered that the pear was far, far from ripe — basically inedible.  I suggested we stick it in a bowl of water with a few squirts of lemon juice and I’ll figure out some dessert to use it in tonight.  This brings up to our next Dark Days Eat Local Challenge dinner.

We made soft tacos with ground beef from Old Creek Ranch.  Cheese from Spring Hill Jersey Cheese Co in Petaluma.  Tortillas from La Tortilla Factory in Santa Rosa.  Sour Cream from Clover Stornetta.  Onion from farmer’s market.  Bell Pepper and Avocado were organic but not local.

For dessert, I sauted then simmered the rescued pear in Clover butter, apple cider from Smit Orchards, cinnamon and a little brown sugar.  Then I made Dutch Babies based on this recipe — though I used about half the amount of recommended butter as I had a fairly small cooking container.  Eggs from farmer’s market Glaum’s Eggs.  Milk from Strauss Dairy.  Flour was organic but not local.

If I keep feeding him this well, baby’s never going to want to come out …
