A Bushel of Fun

Ok, so I don’t actually know what kind of quantity is a bushel.   But we went to the Village Harvest fruit picking day and our group of volunteers picked roughly 1400 pounds of oranges.  We would have picked more but one of the houses we were visiting was a no-show.  How can a house be a no-show?  The owners weren’t there and the gate was locked.  See, the way this project works is that homeowners volunteer their fruit trees, and this organization comes in, picks whatever amount the homeowner wants for themselves, and then takes the rest for the food bank.

Max did great.  He slept for a while in his stroller while both J. and I worked. Then I fed him and he was content in the sling.  Of course, I didn’t get near the tree when he was in the slings because oranges the size of his head were falling left and right.  But J. was picking oranges like a champ.

There were a ton of kids who were there to volunteer.  I will definitely do this again and I will see if my parents would be willing to donate their plum tree to the cause.img_3065img_3066

Isn’t tree gleaning the best?! So glad you got to go and introduce your boy to volunteerism, food recovery and orange dodging!
